How to choose a book to read?
How many books have you read in your entire life? Do you know how important is to read books? Even if you are a book reader, it must have occurred to you which books worth your time? And how can you choose a book to read?
In this article, I talk about choosing the best book to read. We are not going to involve the ways and methods of reading because they are a whole extended world and knowledge. So this is my idea about how to choose and read books based on my experience.
I like to read books based on their subjects and titles. For example, now I decide to read some books about self-esteem, being convincing. This is my method. I don’t choose different kinds of books. I want my mind to be focused on one subject for a while.
Of course, there are exceptions. For example, if someone induces a book and says how amazing it is, I read it even if it’s not the subject I had chosen.
Usually, I choose the titles which are challenging for me at the moment. For example, if I want to present for the audience and I need to be convincing enough, I go for this title of books.
Also, it doesn’t have limitations to read about a title. There are many books and sources to read about one subject. No one can read all the resources and books of a title even if he reads all his life.
So when I reach a place where I think I know well enough about the subject, I drop it and move on to another subject, opening the case of the previous subject for myself to read more when I get the chance.
Then, it comes to choosing and buying a book.
1- The rank of the book helps you choose a book to read
The first important point to know is about the rank of a book. Is it a bestseller? At least, someone great must introduce it.
2- The publisher
Finally, if you couldn’t find the book you need based on its “bestseller” option, you have to pay attention to the publishers and compare them.
Some publishers have a special style, and a delicate consideration to publish the best books. Some others don’t publish every kind of book. So you can choose a book by comparing their publishers too.
3- Knowing the writer helps you choose a book to read
When you don’t know the writer, you can’t have the perfect connection with it. for example, when you know who Nathaniel Branden is, you certainly buy his book about self-esteem called “Six Pillars of Self-esteem” (If you want to know more about this book and its purpose, read “6 quick ways if you want to improve self-esteem” )because you know he had done many types of research about self-esteem and he is an expert in this subject.
It’s a good idea to google about the writers and knows them in each subject you want to pick a book. For example, The Last Lecture is the best book to read about public speaking but I suggest you watch the writer’s video and know more about him to have a better connection with his book.
4- The date of publication
It’s a good idea to check which year has it been published and how this data will help us?
For example, The Art of Public Speaking by Dale Carnegie is for 1915. Almost one hundred years ago and you know how fast the world changes by technology and how people’s minds grow. So you can’t expect this book to speak about PowerPoint techniques in presentation and the usage of technology.
See how incredibly amazing this book is that it’s still one of the bestsellers but you have to pay attention to the fact that these kinds of old books might not have enough accuracy based on the year we are in and the technology we have.
5- Adjusting the language
You probably prefer to choose a book to read in your own language but I prefer to have its original version too. I usually buy a PDF file from Kindle which is a great software to buy books online and have them as PDF. Then I have the original version (which is mostly English as it’s the international language for almost all countries) available too.
Now you can adjust the translated book with the original one. one of the advantages of having the original book is to know the specialized words for example, in a book you see three different words with close meanings such as self-efficiency, self-confidence, and self-esteem. When you have the original book, you can know the difference easily and tell the difference.
6- A book can be wrong
When I first published my book, I realized that a writer isn’t a special person who never makes mistakes. The writers might have their own perspectives, ideas and thoughts and no one is around to tell them the truth.
So when you read something written, it doesn’t mean it definitely is accurate and correct. You can’t use one book as a source and tell everyone that “In this book, it says… and it’s perfectly correct!”
7- involve with the book
When I read a book, I highlight the important stuff, draw emoji, comment on some parts and write my own ideas. Sometimes I compliment the writer when I agree with him/her and sometimes I explain why I am not.
Then when I come back to it 6 months later, I see what ideas and suggestions I had.
