An introvert person has difficulty presenting in public and in this case teachers might suffer more because they deal with many children every day.
Sometimes, introvert teachers wonder if they’ve chosen the right career.
We suggest that teachers use these seven tips and techniques so that they can have a better and more energetic class.
It is a story of an introvert teacher:
I am an introvert teacher who deals with almost 140 students every day.
There is too much noise although it helps the teaching and learning.
All this teacher thinks is to be useful in the middle of this chaos and relinquishes her introversion.
I believe dealing with children especially the noisy ones is very crucial. I try to see them in person one by one instead of in groups and consult them so that maybe I can reduce the pressure of the crowd.
When I first started to work as a teacher, I made myself to be seen in many public places because I believe people who are in public are more successful and seem more attractive.
After I heard some ideas from other teachers about teamwork and cooperation in groups, I decided to work with them although I knew I could do better on my own.
I ate my lunch in the hallway although I preferred to eat in my room and read a book while I was eating.
I participated as a coach in matches and supported the students.
When the teachers discussed classes and students, I felt guilty because I thought that I am not energetic enough.
I was like this an entire year until I realized I couldn’t keep doing this after my first year of teaching.
Lunchtime was even more boring and exhausting than the others, and I’d rather spend some time to think and read instead of eating.
I left the two groups I had joined, and I volunteered to help in independent projects.
This one was a relief, and I thought I finally found a department that was close to my introversion situation. I learned how to get away from the environment which was all filled with extroversion situation to be more effective.
I have some introverted teaching techniques for you that might help:
1- Student consultation
Meet with the kids one by one every week instead of talking to them in groups. It makes you have an organized program and list. It saves your energy and helps your students to have better communication with their teacher. This way they will think they are unique to their teacher.
2- Hobbies for introverted people
Some teachers prefer to write. Wake up sooner in the morning and do some works you like, reading, writing, and painting. These activities make you fresh for the rest of the day.
3- Turn down the volume
Some people may get annoyed by the voices around, so it’s better if you turn down the radio, CD players and … or even turn them off in your car on the way to work. Luckily it’s something that you can control by yourself.
You can silent your room too. Not completely quiet but the sounds can be balanced. You can ask the students to talk in a low voice, and when they are working alone on a project, they can use their own headphones and listen to their favorite songs.
4- Let yourself be alone sometimes
Relinquish some of your activities. For example, I always participated in all the matches my students went and I accompanied them all the time, but recently I let them do these things on their own. This way they can learn how to handle themselves and you as a teacher will see you’re less tired and more energetic.
Also, you can stop going to the dining hall for lunch.
5- Volunteer for individual and independent projects
You can do some of the website works. This way you are always needed at the school, and you can easily work on your own projects.
6- Social media
Above all, you’ll need to express your opinions about teaching and know your wrong actions.
You have to have some close friends, invite them over tea and talk to them about teaching and so on. You can even have some groups in social media and talk there. There is no need to gather in the dining hall at the school to talk about this stuff. You can do it anywhere you want.
When you are with them, You can think together and express your opinions, ask for their advice and so on.
People who don’t know you might consider you as a cold, unfriendly, shy and even angry person. Sometimes, introversion makes you better at two-person-conversation rather than working in groups.
An introvert teacher may not be very good at group talks but very good at writing. He/she may not be able to tolerate a noisy class on the first day but can communicate with them very well throughout the whole week.
I’m not saying that these introverted teaching techniques are the most excellent idea but I think you can check it out to see if it helps your situations.
You can also support the introvert students who don’t know what to do in the crowds at school and teach them what to do.
You have to respect your needs and this will make you a more energetic teacher and a better colleague among the school staffs. I hope these seven introverted teaching techniques will help you to be the best at your job.
